NHS Enfield – Interim Management of Trust GP IT team

Following on from a project to examine the Health Informatics Service and its future role, there was a need to support the GP Information Technology Team and Apira provided an Interim GPIT Manager for the Trust.

NHS Enfield’s GPIT team supports 62 General Practices in the London Borough of Enfield. There are three GP Clinical System Software Suppliers locally and over 2,000 pieces of equipment to manage ranging from Servers to PCs and Printers.

The role included management and timely renewal of the GPIT estate and repair and installation of hardware and software. Also close involvement in supporting national initiatives such as the NHS Care Records Service and the Electronic Prescribing System. The GPIT manager role is also a key advisory role. Increasingly, Primary Care is perceived as the source of key information about patients and their needs. IT is the enabler in allowing Trusts (and going forward GP consortia) to design services that are more efficient and beneficial to patients. In future, GP IT will need to be in a position to provide that information in a more timely manner, giving GP Consortia and the wider NHS clear ‘dashboards’ of real time cost and service capacity.

Apira have supplied an interim GPIT Manager to assist the Trust in developing its strategy firstly in support of local Service Redesign and then working towards GP Consortia. Management of the GPIT Team has also included running team meetings, budget setting and allocation, user groups and seminars for clinical system users. The role involved assisting many other teams in the Trust including Registration Authority (smart cards) for GPs, Polysystems developments, and Information Governance and Security. The role has also led on the early stages of the Summary Care record and Electronic Prescriptions Service.

Since providing an interim manager in January, Apira have assisted the Trust in providing consistent and stable GPIT service to the 62 General Practices for which it is responsible.

The GPIT department now also contributes effectively within the Trust and is able to advise on strategic developments where clinical systems are concerned.

With the application of further associated knowledge in Information Governance, we have also been able advise the Trust on its Information Governance strategy and requirements for the Statement of Compliance
