Sheffield Health and Social Care NHS Foundation Trust awards EPR support contract to Apira

19 July 2021: Sheffield Health and Social Care NHS Foundation Trust (SHSC) has awarded a contract for Professional Services and Consultancy Support for its EPR Programme to Apira, following a competition via the NHS North of England Commercial Procurement Collaborative (NOE CPC)

The partnership will see Apira support the Trust to develop their EPR Outline Business Case, to run their procurement to select a preferred EPR solution, to develop their EPR Full Business Case and award a contract to the successful EPR system partner.

The new EPR will provide clinical and non-clinical teams with improved access to patient information, making it easier for staff to access the right information at the right time. A new EPR solution will operate beyond the Trust and help to improve service user safety by integrating with other local, regional and national systems, helping to provide a more accurate view of every service user and the care provided to them.

It will also support increased efficiencies by supporting single entry of patient data by staff with secure remote access from anywhere, , it will allow data to be reused many times, and also enable information to be easily updated when things have changed.

The new EPR will deliver increased reliability, moving to a more robust system to improve stability and reduce downtime.

Crucially, it will improve service user experience by avoiding the need to unnecessarily repeat their care history, and give reassurance that Trust staff are working on their care in a more joined up and efficient way with other care providers and organisations. In addition, service users will have better  access to their own record and play a greater role in the decisions around their own care and how it is delivered.

“SHSC is committed to supporting our staff and improving the mental, physical and social wellbeing of all the people we serve. Digital is a key enabler by providing staff with the tools needed to carry out their roles effectively, enabling safe, efficient, and high-quality care. A modern, robust and reliable Electronic Patient Record (EPR) solution across the Trust is an essential component of making this a reality and we are pleased to have Apira on board to support our journey. COVID-19 has already demonstrated that there is not just a readiness, but also a desire to use technology to support and enhance the care given to patients and we will look forward to welcoming our new EPR system partner.”

Andrew Male, Chief Digital and Information Officer (DCIO),
Sheffield Health and Social Care NHS Foundation Trust

“Having recently moved into the Head of Procurement role at SHSC, it was important to select a partner that could safely help to develop a strong and robust business case and carefully navigate the procurement process. Apira’s background and experience was an ideal match for what we were looking for and we were pleased to secure their services via the NOE CPC framework following a rigorous competitive process.”

Nicola Woodhead, Head of Procurement,
Sheffield Health and Social Care NHS Foundation Trust

“We were very proud to be awarded a place on the NOE CPC ICT Solutions Delivery framework for Professional Services and Consultancy Support and were pleased to have been successful in our bid to provide support to Sheffield Health and Social care. This was our first bid through the new NOE CPC framework – the process was very straight forward and we would recommend it to other Trusts seeking to procure consultancy services. This framework is a great vehicle dedicated to the types of services required by NHS care providers.

We’ve now followed up the SHSC award with a further award for consultancy services for two Acute Trusts in the North West progressing the procurement of an EPR, and we look forward to supporting more NHS providers to realise their digital journeys”.

Alan Brown, Director of Professional Service,
Apira Ltd

“Our strong background in Mental Health includes support for Leeds and York Partnership NHS Foundation Trust (LYPFT) to safely procure and subsequently deploy their Advanced “CareDirector” EPR solution. This was done during the pandemic in 2020 and clearly positioned us well for the work with Sheffield and has enabled us to mobilise and start to deliver at pace in Sheffield. We’ve already engaged with over 100 clinicians and service users since starting the project at the start of May. There is strong appetite from colleagues across SHSC to be involved in the programme and to move onto a new EPR solution which will build on the success the Trust teams have achieved through their in-house built “Insight” solution over the last decade. We look forward to helping the Trust launch and safely progress their procurement over the coming weeks and months.”

David Corbett, Director of Client Engagement (and Interim Programme Manager for the SHSC EPR Programme),
Apira Ltd

“We are incredibly proud of the service NOE CPC delivers and the expertise of our team. Our ICT Consultancy framework agreement offers a comprehensive solution to NHS organisations ensuring value and compliance. We are delighted utilising the framework has had such a positive outcome for our colleagues at Sheffield Health and Social Care NHS Foundation Trust and that Apira found working with us to be straight forward and supportive.”
