Theatre Assessment Unit + Pre-Operative Unit Re-Development

The North West London Hospitals NHS Trust manages Northwick Park, St Mark’s and Central Middlesex Hospitals. Each year they care for more than half a million people living across Brent, Harrow and beyond – making it one of the biggest and busiest NHS Trusts in the capital. TAU and POU occupied a 3 floor building with Moorfields at Northwick Park Hospital (NPH). In 2008, there were 19 daycare beds and 6 POU consultation rooms. Due to a demand for additional daycare beds and pre-op services at NPH, the Trust decided to permanently relocate Moorfields and reconfigure the site to increase bed capacity and consultation rooms.

As there were insufficient funds for an extension, Apira were appointed to manage the scheme and deliver the solution within the existing structure. The project also posed particular challenges with both departments continuing service throughout the development works. Apira planned and executed the relocation of TAU and Pre-Op services off site to enable the redevelopment works to take place. This involved preparing an empty ward in the main hospital to make it clinically suitable for the two service areas to be transferred temporarily.

Apira engaged in a highly collaborative and inclusive consultation process, bringing together the design team, facilities department and the clinical leads to achieve a clear vision for the combined unit. Working closely with the Trust’s design team, Apira were able to deliver a solution that provided the required bed capacity whilst ensuring all areas met the Department of Health’s HBN requirements.

Apira’s role:

  • Project management
  • Project documentation
  • Design consultancy
  • Preparation of room data sheets
  • Schedule and procurement of all new medical equipment and furniture
  • IT infrastructure specification and management
  • Move management

Apira successfully delivered the project in accordance to the Trust’s Brief. Despite the site constraints and the extremely challenging 10 month programme, the combined unit was handed over on time to the delight of all concerned. The new accommodation now comprises:

  • 9 Pre-Op consultation rooms
  • 33 Daycare beds
  • high spec minor operations room with Medical Air (MA4) supply
  • 2 large waiting areas
  • staff offices
  • staff room and kitchen
  • 4 single sex WCs
  • 2 disabled WCs/ wetrooms
  • equipment stores
