South London and Maudsley NHS Foundation Trust – Mergers and Acquisitions
In recognition of the changing nature of IT services in the NHS, as part of its strategy for growth and to capitalise on the strength of its ICT department, the South London and Maudsley NHS Foundation Trust (SLaM) ICT department wanted to prepare for future possible mergers or acquisitions.
The world of mergers and acquisitions is relatively new to the NHS and to be in a position to respond to and proactively manage an M+A situation required external expertise and experience as well as a good understanding of ICT delivery in Mental Health.
Apira firstly documented the baseline of the range and level of ICT services provided by the SLaM ICT department with an element of benchmarking against best practice.
For each element of this service the impact, risks and benefits to SLaM and another Trust were considered and analysed.
A number of recommendations were made in order to better prepare SLaM for any future M&A activity. A process was also devised which would allow SLaM to proactively manage such a situation and ensure both a reduced risk to SLaM services and an increased chance of a successful merger when/if it happens.
